Dakota. A given name derived from the name of the indigenous Native American Dakota people. “It means Friend or Ally and it couldn’t have been more fitting for my best friend of almost 13 years.” Brad says. Dakota took his own life in January of 2021.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth and young adults (15-34 years). In Alberta, on average we lose nearly 600 amazing humans every year.
Soon after Blue Monday, on January 25, join country-rock duo Flaysher along with special guests Mariya Stokes and Drew Gregory at the King Eddy in Calgary as we celebrate each other and stand together for suicide prevention.
All proceeds will be going to the Thumbs Up Foundation: Thumbs Up Foundation’s purpose is to improve access to mental health care. Our vision is to establish and connect resources for those patients suffering in all areas of mental health. We want to help improve knowledge around mental health; help to create awareness for the need for systemic change(s) to the current access to care, and educate on the devastating loss that can result from these deficiencies.
About Flaysher:
Based on the last name of two ‘loud and proud’ Albertan brothers, Flaysher is a Canadian country-rock duo with multiple CMAB award nominations.
Flaysher has performed on notable stages such as Country Thunder Alberta’s Main stage before Tim McGraw and the 20,000 seater GMC stadium for the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show.
Inspired by the storytelling in 90s country and the energy of heartland rock classics, Flaysher’s high-octane country-rock sound is turning heads in the country music landscape with crossing over 1 Million Global streams as of 2023.
About Mariya Stokes:
If Kacey Musgraves and Meghan Trainor had a country-soul love-child, the result would be Calgary-based country artist Mariya Stokes. Known for her quick wit, quirky sense of humour, and signature retro style, Country Music Alberta’s two-time reigning Female Artist of the Year is in music for the long haul. Growing up in Stavely, Alberta, an hour south of Calgary, Stokes spent time in her parents’ small-town bar, and at eight years old, was sneaking in on Friday afternoons to sing with the local jam band. Now a seasoned performer, she has opened for Doc Walker, Jocelyn Alice, and Jann Arden and was one of three artists selected to work with 19-time CCMA winner Terri Clark at National Music Centre’s RBC Master in Residence program in 2019. In addition, Stokes’ was the 2019 runner-up in Project WILD, a country-focused artist development program run by WILD 95.3 FM (Calgary) and Alberta Music.
About Drew Gregory:
There is an undeniable authenticity and truthfulness to Drew Gregory’s music. The songs of this award-winning Alberta country music sensation are infused with a down-home realism, a gritty honesty, and a vibrant sense of rootedness that comes from years spent working the land as a farmer – an aspect of his life that is deeply connected to his talent as a musician, singer, and songwriter. Gregory, the singer, is also Gregory the farmer – two sides of the same engaging, unpretentious, amiable coin, solidly rooted in the landscape and soil of his rural homestead. The music is as approachable as he is, which also translates on stage as he forms an instant rapport with any audience he performs to.
