Punk-rock-meets-country band Hover Horse joins forces with monsters of folk Hangman Pencil Co. at the legendary King Eddy on May 28.
About Hover Horse:
The Hover Horse band formed in 2024. The lineup consists of Chris Lamb (guitar, vocals), Spider Bishop (bass, vocals), and Lindsay Sutherland (drums, percussion). They revel in the swagger of punk rock and new wave colliding with the heart of country music.
Conjuring a sound of The Cars meeting Wilco, R.E.M. meeting The Skydiggers, Death Cab for Cutie meeting Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Hover Horse offers an audible point of country grit up against post-modern punk rock. The result is powerful, lyrical, and fun.
The band’s first collection of music was released this past summer. The EP Hard Twang is both a love letter and a middle finger to modern country — blending the distorted telecaster growl and the band’s trademark lyrical introspection, with the hard-driving rhythm section. Recorded under a full moon at Arch Studio with Lorrie Matheson, the EP captures the band in full throttle: stripped down, unapologetic, and chasing ghosts through dust and distortion.
About Hangman Pencil Co.:
Rising from the ashes of other Calgary bands you’ve never heard of, hangman pencil co. are on the reluctant path to becoming monsters of folk. Candid vocals, haunting violin, and steadfast mandolin provide a foster home for runaway bass and piano. A dollop of mustard in the sickly sweet custard of life.
