Jazz drummer and composer Jon McCaslin brings excitement and his passion for the jazz tradition and its future to the bandstand. Raised in Regina, Saskatchewan Jon cut his teeth while studying and playing in Montreal, Toronto and New York City before making Calgary his home.
McCaslin has two albums as a leader that feature his original compositions including McCallum’s Island (2003) and Sunalta (2012). As a composer he is inspired by the people and places around him. As a busy sideman he has performed with such nationally and internationally recognized artists as Mulgrew Miller, Peter Bernstein, Ralph Bowen, PJ Perry, Charlie Biddle, Hadley Caliman, Hugh Fraser, Chucho Valdes, Wycliffe Gordon, Terell Stafford, Dick Oatts, Luis Bonilla, Brian Lynch, Harold Mabern, Kelly Jefferson, Don Thompson, Kirk MacDonald, George Colligan and Pat LaBarbera.
Dr. McCaslin completed his Doctorate in Jazz Studies through the University of Toronto in 2015, researching the conceptualization of contemporary melodic jazz drumming and since 2009 he has authored Four on the Floor www.jonmccaslinjazzdrummer.blogspot.com, one of the world’s most read on-line jazz drumming blogs.
