Mo Groovy Meet Up: ZENON+, Uyemi, DJ Delightt

Welcome to Calgary’s first Mo Groovy Meet Up!

Hosted by WCMA BreakOut Artist of the Year Sargeant & Comrade and longtime Calgary R&B session staple Groove Theory by Jamil Ahmed, this talented crew has joined forces to curate some of Calgary’s most unique acts.

In the spirit of cultivating meaningful programming and providing artists with a nurturing performance platform, the “Mo Groovy Meet Up” fosters community for likeminded creators. In this series, we will see performances from our hosts along with the expansive Mo Gravy Records and Groove Theory roster of artists—both local and international.

These endlessly talented tastemakers are breaking the rules on what traditional programming looks like here in Calgary, blending a sea of multidisciplinary mediums such as live bands, visual artists, freestylers, dancers, DJ’s, and beatmakers to create a completely immersive, soulful experience. They are conduits of a totally unique and infectious energy that will force you to put your hands up and get on down to the “Mo Groovy Meet Up”!

The May 12 event will feature ZENON+Uyemi, and DJ Delightt.

About ZENON+:
Zenon is a bi-racial musician who listens to a massive range of music from all over the world and has a unique style borne from this very diversity. They offer original alt-R&B that cleverly dips into other time signatures and delivers the story with rich, soulful vocals and smooth power. Serious about a music career, ZENON graduated in 2019 with a BMus Degree. As a writer and vocal coach, their lyrics and vocal expression is wide; having studied music they are gifted with a pen that crosses all genres and song writing for others is an artistic portfolio offering. ZENON is the recipient of the YYC Music 2021 Prophets of Music Emerging Artist Award and takes pride in having released two singles titled, Something About (rel. Feb 2020), a soulful song about self-reflection and unmasking a controversial side of oneself through lived experience; and What It Was (rel. May 2021) an edgy song exploring the future history we are creating and its parallels to the past. The ISC (International Song writing Competition) recently announced that ZENON is a 2021 semi-finalist for this song. Up next is an album in 2022 showcasing their diverse song writing skills, unique vibes & unforgettable voice. An active musician, ZENON performed over 25 events from July to December last year and 2022 includes performances outside of the city. Live shows feature original songs, covers and songs presented as a songwriter. Check out their events online and catch ZENON solo or in their duo ZENON+ in Calgary and other cities in Alberta.

About Uyemi:
Born in Nigeria and raised in Canada, enigmatic Calgary singer-songwriter Uyemi found her voice listening to the outliers of neo-soul and contemporary R&B, from Erykah Badu and SZA to Frank Ocean and Jhené Aiko. Her debut EP, Butterfly Effect, excavates the depths of love, unhealthy relationships, negative thinking, and the battle within. Over the EP’s four tracks, Uyemi reveals her process of metamorphosis through her diaristic narratives and effortless vocal flow, eventually shedding her cocoon to soar free from trauma and self-doubt and reclaim her power. Uyemi landed in the Top 100 of CBC’s Searchlight contest in 2020 for her self-empowering single, “Don’t Get in Your Way,” about choosing the wrong people in love and loving yourself first before loving another. Since then, she’s become a go-to vocalist in the Alberta music scene, and collaborated with artists such as Jae Sterling and A.Y.E.
