Join Anishinaabe artist Leonard Sumner and soulful singer-songwriter Sashae’ at the legendary King Eddy for National Music Centre’s CIBC Summer Series on September 5.

About Leonard Sumner:

Anishinaabe MC/Singer/Songwriter Leonard Sumner’s storytelling flows directly from the shores of Little Saskatchewan First Nation, located in the heart of the Interlake of Manitoba.

Sumner’s self-determined sound is evidence of his ability to simultaneously occupy landscapes of multiple musical genres including; Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, Country, and Rhythm and Blues.

With every vibration of the strings on his guitar, Leonard rattles the dust off truths that have been buried for far too long. On stage he poetically sings awake the consciousness of audiences who may have been unaware of their slumber.

About Sashae’:

Sasha Spronk, professionally known as Sashae’, is a Canadian singer/songwriter and story curator. She is a wellness practitioner at an award-winning clinic “The Samadhi Tree” and there she practices the healing arts of Sound Therapy, Iridology, Intuitive readings, Coaching and Energy healing. She also makes hand crafted jewellery.

As an avid spirit advocate, she believes “It’s all about balance, and I truly make efforts to stay connected to the earth and myself through music, meditation, nature, dance & creativity.”

Sashae’ is getting ready to release her first Album “Bloom” following her singles “Black Arrow”, “Worth It”, and Between the Lines”, this album’s sultry tones and soothing melodies take you through a unique journey of soundscape, textures and the story of growth. Sashae infuses her music with medicine for the soul.

Sashae’ often refers to herself as a ‘spiritual warrior’, being a survivor of many trials in her lifetime that fostered in her great resilience and perseverance, always seeing her find the will to continue to get up and follow her calling to create. Sashae’ loves to help people share their own stories of trial and triumph, as she understands the medicinal benefit of being raw, being heard and being bold.

From an outsiders view, you wouldn’t suspect that she has gone through the traumas she has, starting before she was even born. Adopted into a family outside of her heritage upon birth, she grew up with the tendency to adapt and accept the tragic history of her birth family. Sashae’ started writing around age 11 to channel out the internal suppression of her emotions. She often felt like a conduit of expressive energy in many facets. Her art comes from her depth but also channels from the collective story. This is soul music to me.

“Soul music is what I am, and I am here to stay.”

The progression of her music runs parallel to her healing quest – and the space created through releasing and transmuting has allowed the true essence of  Sashae’ to shine through.

Over the past 7 years, Sashae’ has performed around Alberta at events such as Art’s Common, Global fest, Sofar Sounds, and Market Collective, in addition to her ongoing performances with Broadview Homes and various local venues. Sashae’ continues on her journey as a solo musician but welcomes and enjoys collaboration with other like-minded artists. Her most current music video “Worth It” is available now on YouTube where you can also find a short animation clip for “Between the Lines”.

Her mission is to spread authentic energy, as her music works to ground the listener with soothing melodies and soulful tones, all while speaking lyrically from her personal insights and life experiences.
