NMC Presents: CIBC Summer Series — SHY FRiEND with Sunset Sabotage

SHY FRiEND and Sunset Sabotage take the stage for the National Music Centre’s CIBC Summer Series at the legendary King Eddy on August 23.

About SHY FRiEND:

SHY FRiEND is what happens when a queer, prairie-based, chronically-online and toxically self-determined artist faces the realities of the music industry in late-stage capitalism. SHY FRiEND is brutally honest, tragically dramatic, and full of feminine rage, and has been turning the Alberta music scene into a church for the queer, alt, pop and punk misfits to share in since 2023 while experiencing the sonic equivalent of their mantra, “TO BE CRINGE IS TO BE FREE”.

In celebration of their new song, “Freaky Nightmare,” SHY FRiEND is chomping at the bit to play the historical King Eddy alongside the fantastic talents of Sunset Sabotage and bringing their own unique brand of chaos to new ears in preparation for their record release this fall!

About Sunset Sabotage:

Sunset Sabotage is an alternative band from Calgary, blending influences of punk, rock, emo, and funk into a sound that’s both raw and melodic. Starting in dive bars and then growing into a project not only made by dynamic energy but emotional range and genre-bending instincts.

Formed by Tyler (guitar, vocals), Kristen (synth, vocals), Cam (bass), and Romer (drums), the band made their debut in April 2022 with Lana, followed by Falling Fast later that year. In 2023, Couldn’t Get Enough introduced a funk-driven shift, while still staying grounded in their alternative roots.

Their self-titled debut EP, Sunset Sabotage, released January 24, 2025, features collaborations with Calgary producers Kevin Davis, Daniel Swinamer, and Cory Bitner. The EP explores themes of independence, nostalgia, and heartbreak.

Whether you’re drawn in by the riffs, the synths, or the lyrics, Sunset Sabotage makes music for late nights, long drives, and everything in between.
