The North Sound with Ashley Ghostkeeper

Award-winning roots-Americana duo The North Sound and Metis-Cree country artist Ashley Ghostkeeper hit the legendary King Eddy stage on May 29.

About The North Sound:

The North Sound was formed in 2014 by lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Forrest Eaglespeaker along with his partner Nevada Freistadt who composes and provides vocal harmonies.

Keeping true to the traditions of Forrest’s heritage, The North Sound was created to share stories of Forrest’s Blackfoot identity and traditions from Treaty 7 Territory. With a no holds barred approach to songwriting, Forrest’s lyrics span across haunting metaphors from everyday experiences to personal realities.

The band’s lyrics and music are a balance that incorporate today’s modern production techniques and writing sensibilities inspired by great storytellers like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. The North Sound is signed to the independent Indigenous record label New Sun Music (Nashville, TN USA), created by JUNO award winner Crystal Shawanda and her partner Dewayne Strobel.

The North Sound has had four singles reach number one on the Indigenous Music Countdown as well as Saskatchewan’s MBC Radio. The band won Sask Music’s Indigenous Artist of the Year award (2020), and has received three nominations from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association (SCMA): Group of the Year, Roots Album of the Year, and their song “Heavy Heart” up for Producer of the Year with Jesse Wieman.

The North Sound has performed at multiple venues and festivals across Canada and the United States, sharing the stage with artists like Blue Rodeo, Kathleen Edwards, Eagle and Hawk, Derek Miller, Susan Aglukark, Celeigh Cardinal, Logan Staats, and many more.

Scott Roos from Exclaim! says The North Sound’s latest album, As the Stars Explode, “offers a fresh take, both musically and lyrically” and “takes a different route compared to the usual country music norms that at times stifle the genre, and it really works.”

Forrest and Nevada call Saskatoon home with their two children and horse. The North Sound seeks to create opportunities that have a positive impact on all communities.

About Ashley Ghostkeeper:

Ashley Ghostkeeper is a Metis-Cree Country Artist originally from Red Deer, Alberta. She was born into a family of singers and songwriters and is heavily influenced by their love of music. A natural storyteller, Ashley’s music connects with her listeners at a deeper level of meaning, while staying true to her country roots. At 8 years old, she began writing and singing her own songs drawing inspiration from artists such as Miranda Lambert, Sara Evans, and The Chicks. The classic 90s country sound helped to carve her honest, down to earth style with an early 2000s country feel. Ashley’s unique singing style encompasses a feeling of sensitivity with a blissful melodic twang.

In her short time in the Canadian Country Music scene, Ashley has seen great success and appeared on both APTN and Global News Edmonton. Both Media outlets featured her on a National level, showcasing her for her amazing writing and music talent. Along with opening up for the iconic Canadian group C-Weed Band, Ashley has also been the show opener for US based Country musician ALEE. Summer of 2022 saw Ashley entertaining crowds at numerous summer festivals, including the popular downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba Music Festival-Sakihiwe. This past year has seen her latest single, the up-tempo, catchy “Waitin’ On A No” blow up on the Canadian Indigenous Music Countdown landing in a top 5 spot! The Debut Music Video for the hit song reached a whopping 60,000 views in its first week of release on music streaming platforms and Apple Music added “Waitin On A No” to their North American playlists Indigenous Now and Boots & Mocs. Ashley was also selected as one of the Top 10 to participate in the Anishinaabeg Gaa-Wiid-Anokiwiiwad Chi-Gidochigewad Indigenous Music Residency.
